ALBUM OF THE WEEK: TORTOISE - BEACONS OF ANCESTORSHIP

I love me some Tortoise, and Beacons of Ancestorship does not disappoint. It's a little light on the jazz side but very heavy on the dirty synths. As always, there is a strong focus on percussion and they are laying on the tribal feel very thick starting with track 3 "Northern Something". Three songs later you'll get the most uncharacteristic song of the bunch, "Yinxianghechengqi"...it's as weird as it sounds. Distorted guitars, thick dirty bass, and frantic time changes make this a standout track for me. All in all, Beacons definitely seems like a different direction for Tortoise, but it somehow isn't a betrayal and always feels distinctly Tortoise. If you haven't heard it, you need to come in and listen to it. If you have heard it and don't own it, you need to come in and buy for 10% off THIS WEEK ONLY!
